Overview

Detect coliforms in water, wastewater, and foods using InMicro® Prepared: Lauryl Tryptose Broth (1X) with DT. Lauryl Tryptose Broth is recommended for the detection of coliforms in water, wastewater, and foods. The production of gas in Lauryl Tryptose Broth serves as a presumptive test for the presence of coliforms in water and foods.

Mallman and Darby developed Lauryl Tryptose Broth and they evaluated a variety of wetting agents and determined that addition of sodium lauryl sulfate to selective media produced the best results for the detection of the coliform group.

  • Selective medium – Selective agent sodium lauryl sulfate inhibits many organisms other than coliforms
  • Ready-to-use – Convenience of prepared media.
  • Easy to interpret – Turbidity in the broth and gas bubbles in the inverted Durham tube indicates a positive fermentation reaction:
    • Positive test – Turbidity with gas production within 48 hours
    • Negative test – Turbidity with no gas production within 48 hours

This medium contains casein peptone that supplies nitrogen, carbon, and sulfur required for the bacterial growth. Sodium chloride provides essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Lactose is the carbohydrate source fermented by coliforms. Dipotassium phosphate and monopotassium phosphate present in the medium serve as buffering agents.
