Cultivate fastidious and non fastidious organisms using InMicro® Dehydrated: Columbia Broth Base.
Cultivate fastidious and nonfastidious organisms using InMicro® Dehydrated: Columbia Broth Base. In 1969, Morello and Ellner described the use of Columbia Broth for the recovery of microorganisms from blood cultures. The formulation was based on Ellner’s Columbia Blood Agar Base with increased cysteine to improve isolation of bacteria from blood specimens. This medium provided superior recovery rates of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, viridans streptococci and enterococci from blood cultures as compared to the results obtained using tryptic soy broth.

This medium contains casein and meat peptones that provide amino acids, peptides and nitrogenous substances necessary for growth. Yeast extract supplies B-complex vitamins. Dextrose is added as a carbohydrate source of energy. L-cysteine provides for improved recovery of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms from blood. Tris is added as a buffer and the medium contains magnesium and iron salts which are beneficial for growth.
