Overview

Selectively isolate and presumptively identify group D Streptococci and Enterococci using InMicro® Dehydrated: Bile Esculin Azide Agar. Esculin agar containing 40% bile, correlated well with serologically confirmed group D streptococci as reported by Swan. Isenberg et al. modified the formulation by reducing the concentration of bile and adding the selective agent, sodium azide.

In the presence of bile, group D Streptococci and Enterococci hydrolyze esculin and form esculetin and dextrose. Ferric ammonium citrate supplies ferric ions which react with esculetin and form brown-black colonies on Bile Esculin Agar.

  • Selective solid media – Selective agents like sodium azide and 1% Oxgall inhibit Bacilli and most gram-positive bacteria other than group D Streptococci and Enterococci.
  • Easy-to-read – black-brown colonies of group D Streptococci and Enterococci are easy to read.
