Tryptic Soy Agar is a general-purpose, nonselective medium providing enough nutrients to allow for a wide variety of microorganisms to grow. It is used for a wide range of applications, including culture storage, enumeration of cells (counting), isolation of pure cultures, or simply general culture. Tryptic Soy Agar many be supplemented with blood to facilitate the growth of more fastidious bacteria or antimicrobial agents to permit the selection of various microbial groups from mixed flora.

This medium contains casein and soy peptones that provide nitrogen, amino acids, and peptides necessary for bacterial growth. Dextrose is a ready source of energy. Sodium chloride supplies essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium.
