Thayer Martin Agar is a selective medium containing antibiotics to isolate Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis, while suppressing commensal microbial flora present in the anal canal, vagina, pharynx and other sites1
Thayer Martin Agar Modified (with Nystatin, Colistin, Vancomycin, Trimethoprim) is a solid medium recommended to isolate Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis.
- Isolates: Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis
- Selective: Colistin, vancomycin and trimethoprim suppress the growth of commensal microbial flora present in the anal canal, vagina, pharynx and other sites. Nystatin inhibits Candida albicans, colistin inhibits most gram-negative microorganisms, including Pseudomonas spp. and vancomycin inhibits gram-positive cocci.

Thayer Martin Agar (Modified) contains hemoglobin, which provides the X factor (hemin). GCHI Enrichment provides the V factor, vitamins, amino acids, coenzymes, and dextrose. Selective agents, vancomycin and colistin, inhibit gram-positive cocci and gram-negative bacilli, respectively. Thayer Martin Agar (Modified) contains nystatin, which has proven effective in suppressing the growth of Candida albicans. Trimethoprim lactate suppresses the swarming of Proteus species. Dextrose enhances the growth of gonococci. A carbon dioxide-generating system that releases gas when in contact with water vapor, helping to create a suitable environment for bacterial growth.
