Ecose™ Ampicillin is an antibiotic in the broad-spectrum penicillin group.
Ecose™ Ampicillin differs from penicillin only by the presence of an amino group, which facilitates penetration through the outer membrane of some gram-negative bacteria. Ecose™ Ampicillin acts by interfering directly with the turnover of the bacteria cell wall and indirectly by triggering the release of enzymes that further alter the cell wall. Ecose™ Ampicillin is used as a selective antibiotic for resistant bacteria, generally at a concentration of 10-25μg/ml for liquid media and 35-50μg/ml for plates and is provided as powder. It is made into stock solution at 10mg/ml in water. Ecose™ Ampicillin is not used to prevent bacterial contamination of cell cultures due to concerns of mammalian and insect cell toxicity.
